Our biggest graduation
We finished our third set of English classes. Because we had so many graduates this time we had to split the graduation into two so they would all fit in the church. In the morning we had the basic and intermediate classes. That was four classes and we had about a hundred people attend.
Some of the classes got together and sang. After the speeches, presentation of certificates, and then the singing we had a light lunch that was followed by some picture taking and then some closing speeches.
All of our graduations have been very good experiences for us. The students treat them with great respect. Most everyone dressed up in dark pants and a white shirt.
In the afternoon we had our two advanced classes graduate. There was about 35 in attendance. In total we had about a hundred and sixty student graduate. In order to graduate you needed to take the midterm and final exam and attend 50% of the classes. We had about 32 class sessions.
Each of the graduations had two masters of ceremonies chosen from the students. Cheryl spoke at the first graduation and I spoke at the second graduation.
Each student had their name read and came forward and received a diploma.
A neighborhood dance group came and performed a traditional dances.

Dear Lee and Cheryl. What an awesome thing this is for each of you and for each of your students. Your time in Timor Leste will be remembered not only by you but by each of those students and the many, many wonderful people you have met and worked with during your time there. God bless you to have the physical and spiritual strength to continue this fabulous mission you have been given. Love you guys.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the kind words. It's interesting how teaching English has become such an important part of our mission. Cheryl and I sometimes laugh because before we started this we knew so little about English grammar. We still don't know much but at least we know enough to get by. We will be teaching one half of a semester of English classes and then we go home.
