Krakatoa volcano

1883 there was a cataclysmic eruption of the Krakatoa volcano. It was the most violent volcanic eruption recorded in modern history. 36000 people died. The eruption Was heard over 2,000 miles away. The eruption destroyed the volcano. Since then it has been rebuilding itself.
Our group had plans to hike up to the volcano cone but as you can see it was busy.

We were in the vicinity as part of a senior Mission conference. This was our sightseeing day. We took a boat from the mainland in Indonesia for what was supposed to be a one and a half hour ride. The boat was poorly maintained and kept stalling so it took about twice that. A lot of people including me got a little seasick.
Back on the mainland we had dinner at a place where you pick your fresh fish that's stored on ice and they barbecue it for you. It was a pretty humble restaurant. While we were eating a rat and a cat ran through the dining room.
This is the boat we travel to the volcano on
Below these floating platforms are fishnets. Workers live in the little hut on top to maintenance the net and at night they light torches to draw the fish in. Recently one of them broke loose and drifted out to sea. The fisherman was at sea for 46 days until he got picked up. He survived by eating the fish that he had caught in the net and then drinking sea water that was filtered through his shirt. I did not know that would work.
These are the senior missionaries in our mission. The two on the left are the mission president and his wife. All of them except for Cheryl and I are on member leadership support missions and are in Indonesia. They were a nice bunch to hang out with. All of them are so faithful and dedicated to the gospel. They were all friendly too. Two of the men are serving while they're in their 80s. They are the second from the left and the one on the far right.
This is the hotel that we stayed at. They had this neat swing.
