No one ever seems to get hurt

Just prior to our English class we heard a large crashing sound outside. A truck that was carrying a large piece of equipment caught on an electrical line and ripped down the electrical pole. The live electrical wire was hanging down to the street. We could see sparks come from the wire as vehicles ran over it.

If you look closely you can see the uncovered wire right next to the man's hand as he tries to lift the wire so it clears the truck that he's on.

I think this man was from the vehicle that brought down the wire. He is in the middle of the street holding the electrical wire.
Here are some of the motorcycle traffic on the street going over the wire.
The truck that brought down the wire did not stay there very long. As it attempted to move down the street there were other wires that were low. They have a man positioned on the piece of equipment and his job was to move the wire high enough so the equipment could fit under it. Sometimes he would use the stick you can see in the picture and in this case he just used his hand.

In spite of all these hazards and risks no one got hurt. In about a half an hour the city came and repaired the line. It was interesting to notice that the electrician working on the line was on an aluminum ladder.

It's remarkable here that we never see any horrible accidents. People are just really lucky or we just haven't seen everything yet.
We were given this unusual fruit that is grown here on the island. From the outside they look like apples but weigh only about one half of what an apple should. When you cut it open it has a seed center that's in a jelly kind of suspension. The seeds seem a little bit like pomegranate seeds. To eat it you just dip your spoon down and scrape out the seeds and the sauce. It was delicious. It had a citrusy taste and was sweet. I have no idea what they're called. There's a local tetun word, but nothing that I never recognize.
Bathing suits are almost never worn by young men under the age of 10. They are always naked in the water.
We found a wonderful restaurant only about a half a mile from our house. It's called the Nautilus restaurant. It's owned and operated by an Australian. There's always a bunch of Australians gathered around the bar talking. The great thing is that they have Western food. So far we've had steak, chicken and a Hawaiian pizza. Indonesian food is great but we were getting a little bit tired of it. Will probably eat here about once a week.

This picture is looking out the front door. If the lighting was better you'd be able to see the street and then the ocean.

We also visit a another restaurant which is called the Hotel Esplanade which is located just two doors down from the Nautilus. It is a second-story balcony restaurant. It looks over the water. We had a great meal there. Marinated meat over spinach. The thing on top is some sort of corn biscuit. The thing that looks like a can of beer is actually the napkin holder.

We eat out a lot because it's easier than cooking our own food and more importantly it's hard to find much to eat in the grocery store. This week when we went the only produce we could buy we're apples. No lettuce, no citrus, nothing you can make a salad out of. The only meat available to us was chicken. It's very hard to find cooking spices and basic items such as sugar. When you do see some of these items you buy a whole bunch because they're not regularly stocked. Somehow the restaurants seem to have a much better selection. We only choose restaurants that look like they won't make us ill. Restaurant food here is only about 60% as expensive as back home. There is no tax on the food. And a tip is not expected.

This is our walk home from both of the restaurants.
