Jungle garden

In the morning we attended a Presentation ceremony for the mid wives association.  LDS charities financed gift bags of baby care products to be given to patients of the mid wives.  The couple we are replacing, Elder and Sister Demke, are at the left end of the table.

This was an unusual day having two honoring ceremonies in the same day. Usually they're only about one a month.

In the afternoon we traveled to a jungle Village  just on the outskirts of town to check on the progress of a Garden education project. Key hole garden projects enable villages to grow crops year-round even in the dry season. LDS charities paid for 5 demonstration gardens to be built around at various villages.

Demonstration Gardens are created and then donated usually to an elderly member of The Village. It is hoped that successful Gardens will be copied by members of the community.

The garden was constructed in a plateau area at the top of a long uphill Trail. All of the supplies including Hollow concrete blocks and bags of cement were hauled up on foot.

The Village had gathered for a ceremony which included honoring LDS Charities for donating the money for construction.

The Village was almost exactly what you would expect to see in a very poor and jungle type country. The road to it was not paved and very rough. Some of the houses had electricity but none of them had Plumbing. Many of the villagers did not have shoes. All of the villagers seem to be happy and we're very friendly. Only a few spoke English so the remarks had to be translated. We kept the ceremony short because a thunderstorm was forming that would make the downhill walk back to the car very difficult and might flood the riverbed we had to walk through before getting to the car.

The ceremony included remarks from the organizing agency as well as from various Village leaders. Sister Demke remarks on behalf of the LDS charities. After the remarks The Village presented Sister Demke, Cheryl and I with a ceremonial scarf.

The trail was a little difficult. On the way down the community leader assisted Cheryl. Notice he is not wearing any shoes even while walking on the Rocky Trail. Cheryl is wearing the scarf that we were presented with. It was very hot and humid.

 Burger King is so comforting. It is the only thing that is like home here. The quality of the food is every bit as good as in America. When were eating in Burger King it feels like Gourmet dining.  This has been our first week of English classes. We overbook the classes to account for attrition that we will have. Until they shrink down it's quite a bit more effort to teach. We have about 40 in each class. This year we started an advanced class and in that class we have two writing sessions. We have given each student a small notebook. They turn in the book at the end of each class and we take them home and correct them. Luckily the level of language sophistication is within our abilities. Our Replacements have arrived

This is Sister Staples and sister Gruwell. They have arrived here for a 10-day transition as our replacements. They were transferred in from the mission office in Jakarta. They are here until the middle of November until Elder and sister Bitter arrive. They have a great attitude and are very capable. We already feel some of our load being lifted.  One of our English classes wrote us some thank you notes. More thank you notes. Things are starting to wrap up very nicely. We got all of our legal agreements approved for the three projects that we just got approved. We will able able start all three projects and get them funded before we leave. The projects are a village water system, teaching intermediate English classes in a neighboring rural Village and training farmers and helping them start a community garden.

Travel to Salt Lake City for Humanitarian Training

We met brother and sister fox in the mission home. They are on their way to a mission in England Today was our first day of humanitarian training. We took a train from Provo to Salt Lake City. We were then picked up by brother and sister Walton who are the coordinators for senior missionaries. They then dropped us off and Welfare Square. We were meant by Bryant Pankratz who is one of the directors of the services there. He gave us some training and then a tour throughout the facility. We visited Deseret Industries, The Granary the Dary area and the Deseret Industries store. We didn't travel to the Joseph Smith building which is the converted Hotel Utah. We had a wonderful lunch.
